Juneteenth: Freedom, Resilience, and the Work Ahead

Juneteenth is more than a historical date; it is a living reminder of the enduring struggle for freedom, equity, and justice in America. On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved Africans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
At Monarch PSG, this day compels us to reflect on how far we have come and the responsibility we carry forward. The legacy of enslavement shapes persistent inequities in our environmental health, food systems, economic opportunity, education, and climate resilience. These are not isolated issues, but interconnected systems that demand intentional, justice-centered solutions.
We believe that environmental and climate justice are inseparable from racial justice. There can be no true sustainability without equity. In supporting communities, institutions, and leaders driving transformative change, we are committed to amplifying historically marginalized voices and advancing strategies that move us toward collective liberation.
Today, we honor the resilience of the ancestors who made progress possible. We also recommit to the necessary work ahead. Juneteenth is both a celebration and a call to action.
Freedom is not only remembered. It is built.
